When your child receives an overdue notice, it is simply to let you know that they may have a book missing from the media center. They may look like bills, but I do not expect payment to come in to the school at that time if a book is lost. I prefer that we take time to look for the book, at least 3-4 weeks before marking it down as completely gone and getting payment for a new copy. These are computer generated notices, and they are printed once a month in media. Depending on what day your child has media, the notice may be created that morning, placed in the teachers mailboxes to go home that afternoon, and your child has class that day and returns the book but still gets a notice. You can discard the notice when they get home if you know for sure that the book has been returned. I am simply trying to provide notice to parents when there are missing books so that you can help your child find them and return them to school. Also because we are on a 5 day rotation this can sometimes cause students to receive a notice when they have book exchange the very next day and the book really is not late. Please bear with the notices, they are definitely not perfect!! If a student does lose a book, it is a common thing, and happens all the time. Once the parent or guardian has contacted me and let me know that the book is completely lost, it stops effecting the student's grade. The book does not need to be paid for exactly at the time of loss, just so long as the replacement cost is sent into the school prior to the end of the school year, things will be fine. If a book is not paid for, because our check out is automated, that fee or fine sticks with your child until it is paid for and removed. This can travel with students from one county school to the next and from grade level to grade level until restitution has been made. The student will show a fine in their account in red until the issue is addressed. So, if you see notice come home that a book is lost or missing, it could actually be from a prior year or even from another school.
I will NOT allow materials to be checked out at the beginning of the year if a student still carries a fine from the last year until I hear from a parent or guardian regarding the situation. If your child transfers in with lost materials this will also hold true in that I will NOT permit Rockland Woods materials to go home with them until we speak about the already existing missing items.
Book return is a LARGE portion of a student's grade in media, especially in grades K-2. So please help your child to return their library book on the due date, it will definitely help them to learn the routine and to keep their grade up!
