Grading Policy for Library Media
GRADING POLICY: Grades are determined for library media in a number of different ways, but the main factor is book return, behavior, participation, and research and technology skills. We complete a lot of research and electronic products from our research projects (Pixie and PowerPoint) that are graded as well. Many things are done on the computer, so they have to be completed in the media center, so there is minimal homework given in this class, but on occasion there will be. When homework is given, it will be posted on this website along with the school home page and Facebook.
For book return, all students start out with 4 points per day and if they forget books they receive a 2 for the day. This score will be shown in the Appreciates Literature category of the standards based report card. Overdue notices are printed every 3 weeks or so, and these act as notices to parents that books are missing. Please try to help your student out with this very important library skill.
In the first marking period (MP1 and MP2) the majority of the standard scores for all students comes from book return and behavior, as well as technology skills and research abilities. In grades K-1 the standard numbers come from book return, behavior and early developing technology skills (can I use a mouse, can I identify the computer, the monitor, can I follow basic directions for navigating to a website and running a program). That does change with the second marking period (MP3 and MP4), and behavior definitely becomes a major factor in the grade they earn. In the second marking period we will do research and begin taking notes and creating products.
In the second term (marking periods 3 & 4) for media, students in grades 2-5 will take an assessment that results in a score that is averaged in to their standard scores for the marking period. Students in grades 3-5 complete research projects and the accompanying Word documents and PowerPoint projects are graded.
Media is only graded in marking period 2 and marking period 4. If you have any questions about the grading process, please contact me at [email protected].
**If you ever have questions about a grade, please contact me for further explanation. I do NOT answer the telephone in the media center unless I am free, I will not answer during class, so please leave a message. The best method for contacting me is email. The extension is 8492.
